CALIFORNIA: YouTube is changing the way it counts views on videos, with the new system set to take effect Aug. 24, 2026. The company says the change will not directly affect creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program.
Under the new system, a view will be counted as soon as a regular video begins playing. For live broadcasts, a view will be recorded when a viewer enters the livestream.
Previously, a regular video generally needed to be watched for at least 30 seconds for a view to be counted. YouTube said the change is designed to make view measurement more consistent across regular videos, Shorts and livestreams while giving creators a clearer picture of their overall audience exposure.
YouTube said the new view-counting system will not change how creators earn money or determine eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program.
Creators will continue to have access to the previous view metric through YouTube Analytics. The metric will help them determine how many viewers continued watching beyond the opening moments of a video.
For monetization, YouTube will continue using metrics such as engaged Shorts views and engaged watch hours. Eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program will likewise continue to rely on qualified Shorts views and qualified watch hours rather than the new headline view count.
YouTube is also set to tighten eligibility requirements for new creators seeking to join its advertising revenue program from Feb. 1, 2027.
Under the new requirements, creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours during the previous 12 months, up from the current 4,000 hours. For Shorts, creators will need 20 million qualified views in the previous 90 days, compared with the existing threshold of 10 million.
The changes have drawn mixed reactions from YouTube users. Some have raised concerns that counting a view immediately after a video starts could benefit creators producing low-quality or AI-generated content designed to attract brief clicks.
Others have compared the new system with view-counting practices used by other social media platforms.

YouTube said the primary goal is to simplify and standardize view measurement across different content formats while continuing to provide creators with additional analytics to help them understand their genuine audience engagement.
