The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Saturday delivered verdicts in two major cases related to the 9 May incidents. The cases involved the burning of vehicles in Gulberg and setting a container on fire at Kalma Chowk. Senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have been handed strict prison sentences.
Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Judge Arshad Javed announced the verdict inside Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Judge Arshad Javed Chadhar, while delivering the detailed verdict, stated that the allegations of torching government and private vehicles in Gulberg on 9 May were proven in court. The court sentenced Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mehmood-ul-Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, and Umar Sarfraz Cheema to ten years in prison each.
The court also ordered the arrest of four absconding accused Mian Aslam Iqbal, Shehzad Khurram, Ali Malik, and Shabnam Jahangir and stated that legal action will be taken against them after their apprehension.
It was noted in the verdict that Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s challan has not yet been submitted, and his trial will begin in the next phase once the supplementary challan is filed.
In total, verdicts were delivered for 29 accused, while challans against 33 defendants, including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, have been submitted in court. During the trial, statements of 41 witnesses were recorded, which the court considered while issuing its judgment.
