Instagram is rolling out a new rule restricting users to only five hashtags per post and reel. CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed the update, explaining that the change is designed to improve content discovery while cutting down spam.

The platform has previously tested hashtag limits, sometimes allowing only three per post for select users. The new universal cap of five applies to everyone.

CEO Adam Mosseri stressed that well-chosen, relevant hashtags outperform long, generic lists. “Quality over quantity is key,” he stated.

Instagram aims to reduce spam, abuse, and irrelevant tagging, which often clutters feeds and hinders post visibility. Thoughtful hashtag use helps boost engagement and creates a cleaner browsing experience.

    • Be intentional: Use hashtags that match your content, e.g., beauty creators should stick to beauty-related tags.
    • Avoid overused or generic tags: #reels or #explore may not improve reach and could hurt engagement.

This new limit encourages strategic and meaningful hashtag use, making posts more effective for creators and feeds cleaner for users, aligning with Instagram’s ongoing push for quality content over gimmicks.
