The Commissioner of Karachi has set the wholesale price of sugar at Rs 140 per kilogram and the retail price at Rs 143 per kilogram across the city, according to a notification issued by his office. The new prices are effective immediately and will remain in force until further notice.

The commissioner warned that no individual or organization is allowed to sell sugar at rates other than the official price list and said legal action would be taken against violators. He also instructed wholesalers and retailers to display the official price list prominently in their shops.

Earlier in December 2025, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association, reported that sugar prices in Karachi’s wholesale market had dropped by Rs 6 per kilogram, providing some relief to traders. Prices in the wholesale market fell to Rs 146 per kg, while the ex-mill price dropped to Rs 142 per kg following the start of the crushing season. Since December 1, prices have decreased by Rs 54 per kg.

However, retail prices remain high, with sugar being sold at Rs 170 to Rs 180 per kg, which Ibrahim attributed to administrative negligence. He expressed hope that sugar prices could fall further to around Rs 120 per kg by the end of the month, provided proper monitoring is ensured, and urged authorities to make sure wholesale price reductions are reflected in retail markets.
