ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed General Aamer Raza as the Commander of the National Strategic Command after promoting him from Lieutenant General to the rank of four-star general, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
General Aamer Raza was previously serving as the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) of the Pakistan Army before being elevated to the new position.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said that the premier congratulated General Raza on his promotion and appointment, wishing him success in undertaking the responsibilities of the key assignment.

The position of Commander National Strategic Command was created after the passage of the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025, which introduced changes to the country’s senior military command structure.
Under the same legislation, Field Marshal Asim Munir was appointed as the Chief of Defence Forces.
The new command structure was introduced following the abolition of the office of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), with General Shamshad Mirza serving as the last officer to hold the position.
General Aamer Raza’s appointment marks another significant change in Pakistan’s defence leadership structure, with the newly established National Strategic Command role becoming part of the revised military framework.
