WhatsApp tests ‘Guest Chats’ feature for account-free messaging

Feature enables guests to access chats through a secure link that opens in WhatsApp Web on both mobile and desktop browsers.

WhatsApp is testing a new feature called “Guest Chats,” allowing users to join conversations without creating an account or installing the app.

The feature enables guests to access chats through a secure link that opens in WhatsApp Web on both mobile and desktop browsers. As of March 2026, it is being rolled out to a limited number of beta testers on Android and iOS.

    How it works

A registered user can generate an invite link via the “Invite a friend” option and share it through SMS, email, or other platforms. Recipients simply click the link and select “Continue as guest” to join the chat.

Guests can enter a display name, and their profile is marked with a “Guest” label visible to the registered user. Each session generates a unique identifier that creates an encryption key, ensuring conversations remain private. Guests can view the inviter’s phone number, while hosts retain the ability to block unauthorized participants.

    Key limitations

Despite its convenience, the feature comes with several restrictions: no group chats, no media sharing, including photos, videos, or stickers, no voice or video calls and chats expire after 10 days of inactivity.

The move appears to be an effort by Meta Platforms to attract new users by lowering the barrier to entry. The feature remains in the testing phase, with no official timeline announced for a wider release.
