WhatsApp may soon make one of its most basic features a lot more convenient.

According to a report by WhatsApp Beta Info, the company is working on a new feature that will show users their online contacts in one place.

Right now, finding out whether someone is active on WhatsApp is surprisingly manual. Users have to open individual chats one by one and check the top of each conversation to see if a contact is online or when they were last active. That may change soon.

Under this system, favorite contacts will appear at the top, followed by contacts who are currently online, while recently active users will be shown below.

The report said this new section will be available in WhatsApp settings. However, the platform’s existing privacy rules will remain unchanged, meaning only users who allow others to view their own online status will be able to see the activity status of other people.

As with many WhatsApp beta discoveries, there’s no guarantee the feature will launch soon. The company is known for taking its time to roll out experimental tools globally across iPhone and Android.
