Way to take steam for cold and flu, benefits and precautions

During the winter season, colds, flu, and nasal congestion become common problems. One of the most widely used home remedies for relief is steam inhalation, a method trusted for generations.

However, health experts warn that if steam is not taken properly, it can cause harm instead of benefit. Knowing the correct method and precautions is essential.

Steam helps open the airways, reduces nasal blockage, and softens thick mucus. Warm steam can also provide temporary relief from throat dryness and irritation. Some people experience reduced headaches and facial pressure, as steam helps open sinus passages for a short time.

According to experts, to take steam safely, boil water in a wide pot and place it on a stable surface to avoid spills. Sit at a safe distance from the pot and cover your head with a towel or cloth to trap the steam. Keep your eyes closed and breathe slowly through both the nose and mouth. Five to ten minutes of steam is usually enough, as taking it for too long may cause dryness of the skin and airways.

Plain water steam is effective on its own, but some people add mint leaves, cloves, or eucalyptus oil. Doctors advise that if oil is used, only two to three drops should be added, as excessive amounts can irritate the respiratory tract. For children, simple steam without any additives is considered safer.

After taking steam, it is important to avoid exposure to cold air. Dry your face and head properly and remain in a warm environment for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Drinking lukewarm water afterward can also help soothe the body from within.

People with asthma, chronic breathing problems, high blood pressure, or heart disease should consult a doctor before taking steam. Children should never be placed close to boiling water due to the risk of burns, and elderly individuals are advised to take steam with someone nearby for safety.

Experts recommend taking steam once or twice a day only. Frequent steam inhalation can dry out the nasal passages and skin, which may worsen discomfort.

Medical professionals stress that steam inhalation is not a complete treatment for colds or flu but only provides temporary symptom relief. If symptoms such as fever, severe cough, chest pain, or difficulty breathing occur, medical attention should be sought instead of relying solely on home remedies.

Experts also emphasize that prevention is key during winter. Wearing warm clothing, maintaining hand hygiene, eating a balanced diet, and drinking enough water are important steps to stay healthy. When taken correctly and with care, steam inhalation can be a safe and effective home remedy during the cold season.
