Agreement aims to enhance global defensive capabilities against the spread of affordable, high-tech military equipment, particularly drones.

United Kingdom and Ukraine are set to sign a new defence partnership aimed at tackling the growing threat posed by low-cost drones, Downing Street announced ahead of a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions following the recent US-Israeli war with Iran, during which Iran has primarily used ballistic missiles against Israel, while deploying drones to target locations in Gulf states.

According to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, the agreement aims to enhance global defensive capabilities against the spread of affordable, high-tech military equipment, particularly drones.

The partnership will combine Ukraine’s battlefield experience—gained during its prolonged war with Russia—with the UK’s industrial capacity to manufacture and supply advanced drone technologies and innovative defence solutions.

“Drones, electronic warfare, and rapid battlefield innovation are now central to national and economic security,” Starmer said, noting that these challenges have been further intensified by ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Under the agreement, the UK will also provide £500,000 ($670,000) to establish an AI Centre of Excellence within Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.

Zelensky’s visit to London comes as he has voiced concerns that global attention on Middle East tensions could overshadow Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia. European allies have, however, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Kyiv, even as shifting geopolitical dynamics influence international policy decisions.
