Spotify tests new button that lets premium users skip podcast ads

Spotify is testing a new “skip ahead” button for premium subscribers that could let listeners bypass podcast ads, introductions and sponsorship messages with one tap, giving users an easier way to move through episodes while raising concerns about podcast revenue.

The new feature was recently noticed by users during podcast ad breaks. Instead of repeatedly pressing Spotify’s regular 15 second skip button, listeners can reportedly use the new option to jump directly to the next part of an episode.

However, Spotify has not officially announced a full launch, and it remains unclear whether the button will become available to all users.

Spotify Premium generally reduces or removes many forms of advertising on the platform. However, have long been different because some advertisements are placed directly inside episodes by podcast creators.

The new skip option could have a direct effect on podcasts that depend on advertising income, when listeners skip sponsored messages, advertisers may receive less exposure, potentially making podcasts less attractive to sponsors.

For many independent and ad supported podcasts, sponsorships are an important source of income, a major increase in ad skipping could therefore create concerns for creators who rely on these deals to fund their shows.

If that approach continues, the feature could give Premium subscribers greater control over podcast content for now, the “skip ahead” button remains a test rather than a confirmed permanent feature.
