SKARDU: The body of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who went missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak, has been recovered, the Alpine Club of Pakistan said.

According to the club, local volunteers from Tassar in the Shigar district located Sakhi’s body during a self-organized search operation.

The volunteers involved in the search included Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir and Abuzar. The Alpine Club said they, along with Zaman and other members of the team, moved Sakhi’s body from Camp 1 to the base camp.

The club said the body would be transported to Skardu by helicopter on Thursday if weather conditions allowed.

The Alpine Club expressed condolences to Sakhi’s family and the wider mountaineering community.

The recovery comes about 15 days after an avalanche struck Broad Peak, leaving 10 climbers missing. The bodies of seven climbers, including five Nepalese mountaineers, have since been recovered.

Earlier, Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of eight climbers who went missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, officials said on Friday.

Authorities said four additional bodies were located during the latest phase of the search operation, bringing the total number of recovered climbers to eight. Three of the bodies recovered earlier in the day were transported to Skardu by helicopter.

Search-and-rescue operations remain underway for two missing climbers, with teams continuing to comb the remote, high-altitude terrain.

Provincial Tourism Minister Neiknam Karim said every effort was being made to locate the remaining climbers, adding that the tourism department was providing logistical support to the rescue mission.

The climbing team included mountaineers from the United States, China, Nepal and Oman, as well as Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi.
