Saleh Mohammadi executed as Iran intensifies brutal crackdown

In a harrowing escalation of repression, 19-year-old wrestling prodigy Saleh Mohammadi was publicly executed in Qom, Iran, sending shockwaves through the global sports and human rights communities.

Once celebrated as a rising star within Iran’s national wrestling team, Saleh Mohammadi’s burgeoning career and extraordinary promise were abruptly extinguished under charges widely condemned as politically motivated.

His execution stands as a stark testament to the regime’s unrelenting campaign to stifle dissent turning a symbol of athletic excellence into a chilling emblem of fear and authoritarian control.

Mohammadi was executed alongside Mehdi Ghasemi and Saeed Davoudi, following convictions for alleged involvement in the killing of two security personnel during anti-government protests earlier this year.

Authorities claimed the men attacked the officers using knives and swords, framing the incidents as acts of severe hostility toward the state.

Although Iran’s judiciary maintained that trials were conducted and ratified by the Supreme Court, human rights organisations have denounced the proceedings as deeply flawed, coercive, and devoid of due process.

As a decorated athlete, Mohammadi had previously attained a bronze medal at the 2024 Saytiyev International Cup in Russia, marking him as one of Iran’s most promising wrestling talents.

His arrest in January coincided with widespread civil demonstrations across multiple Iranian cities, wherein citizens voiced grievances over political repression and economic hardship.

Reports indicate that Mohammadi’s confession was coerced and that he was denied access to legal counsel of his choosing, raising serious questions about the legitimacy of his trial.

The case echoes the infamous execution of wrestler Navid Afkari in 2020, illustrating a pattern in which the Iranian regime systematically targets athletes and public figures to intimidate society and quash dissent.

Prominent Iranian-American wrestlers and human rights advocates have vociferously called upon international sporting bodies to take decisive action, advocating for sanctions, suspensions, and other measures to prevent further politically motivated executions.

Reactions have been swift and vehement. Nima Far, a human rights activist and expert on Iranian wrestling, condemned Mohammadi’s execution as “a deliberate political assassination” and urged international federations to intervene robustly rather than relying on quiet diplomacy.

Iranian-American activist Masih Alinejad highlighted the broader human rights violations, noting that sham trials, forced confessions, and closed-door proceedings are employed to silence athletes and suppress fundamental freedoms.

Despite global outcry and direct warnings, the Iranian judiciary proceeded with the execution, alleging that the men acted on behalf of foreign powers an oft-repeated pretext used to justify harsh crackdowns on protesters.

This brazen act has intensified scrutiny of Iran’s capital punishment policies and highlighted the acute dangers faced by athletes and activists in the country.

The tragic demise of Saleh Mohammadi serves as a sobering reminder of the peril faced by young Iranians who dare to dissent.

It underscores the urgent necessity for international attention, protective measures, and accountability to ensure that athletic talent and human courage are not extinguished in the service of authoritarian control.
