Pakistan, which is in the eye of the storm due to severe supply chain disruptions and soaring oil prices, is likely to see a sharp decline in production.

The Fund's latest outlook is a point of concern that demands immediate corrective measures.

The global lender, however, predicts a rebound of up to 6.6% growth in 2027, a projection that remains contingent upon the trajectory of energy supplies.

The region has already suffered a slump in energy production alongside a severe slowdown in tourism and investment.

Furthermore, the IMF warns that external financial conditions could tighten globally if investors reassess AI-driven productivity gains while interest rates rise.Pakistan, however, has walked a tightrope as far as its commitments to the IMF programme are concerned, earning a pat on the back for clinching macroeconomic stability.

Reflecting this progress, the World Bank's 2026 report noted that Pakistan recorded a GDP growth of 3.7%.

This turnaround has subsequently driven an improvement in the country's credit rating, backed by the fact that total liquid foreign exchange reserves have surged past $21 billion.

Similarly, global lenders have exhibited renewed confidence in the economy; when bonds worth $750 million were floated, the market response was a definitive success.

Last but not least, the central bank has been astute in managing the policy rate as average headline inflation is officially estimated at 7.1%, while the state has successfully engineered a substantial financial cushion. The country, nonetheless, faces an arduous road ahead as unemployment, political instability and external shocks cast a long shadow over a fragile economy.

Likewise, climate degradation, a drawdown in agrarian production and thinning exports are daunting challenges that can only be overcome through strategic structural reforms.

A surgical overhaul of the taxation machinery is inevitable to stay afloat.
