PM stated that the initial target of the scheme is to finance 50,000 housing units.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally launched the ‘Apna Ghar Scheme’ and distributed bank cheques among eligible applicants for housing loans.

Under the initiative, loans of up to Rs10 million will be provided on easy terms. The scheme will be implemented across all four provinces, as well as in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing the launching ceremony, the prime minister congratulated the successful applicants and termed the provision of shelter a “sacred responsibility.”

He said it was a matter of great pleasure for him to attend the ceremony and reaffirmed that ensuring housing for the common citizen remains a top priority of the government. He also hinted at major announcements in the upcoming budget.

He emphasized that providing a roof over people’s heads is one of the most critical responsibilities of any state, adding that the government is committed to facilitating affordable housing for ordinary citizens.

The prime minister stated that the initial target of the scheme is to finance 50,000 housing units, with Rs321 billion allocated for the purpose. Over the next four years, the government aims to support the construction of 500,000 homes.

He noted that the scheme has been developed through extensive consultation between government stakeholders and the private sector.  Highlighting inclusivity, he mentioned that individuals from various backgrounds including a driver named Ghulam Hussain have benefited from the scheme.

According to the details, the scheme will enable construction of houses on plots of up to 10 marlas. The prime minister also pledged to personally review the scheme’s progress on a monthly basis.

He further said that the construction sector plays a vital role in driving economic growth. Banks participating in the scheme will be awarded medals on Independence Day (August 14).

He added that the government is also encouraging exporters, granting distinguished exporters honorary ambassador status and issuing them blue passports for two years.
