Paul Schrader received an emotional reception at the Venice Film Festival on Friday night, as his latest film, The Basics of Philosophy, premiered out of competition to a 4.5-minute standing ovation.
The 80-year-old director appeared visibly moved as the credits rolled, with star Jack Huston patting him on the back as the crowd cheered “Bravi, Bravi!”
The film stars Huston as John Jorissen, a philosophy professor at a small liberal arts college whose carefully ordered life unravels when a person he wronged years earlier unexpectedly reappears, forcing him into a reckoning with guilt and long-buried desire.
Sofia Boutella plays Becca, Jorissen’s partner and colleague, with a supporting cast that includes Daniel Zovatto, Bill Pullman, Dana Delany, Shiloh Fernandez, Karl Glusman and Elizabeth Petruso.
Martin Scorsese came aboard as an executive producer ahead of the festival, lending additional weight to the film’s international rollout.
Schrader described the film as another entry in his long-running fascination with what he calls the “Man in the Room” archetype, the isolated, secretive figure who first took shape as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver and has resurfaced throughout his career since.
“He’s the loner who keeps his own company, keeps a diary and wears a mask, which is his profession,” Schrader told The Hollywood Reporter of the recurring type.
Speaking to reporters in Venice, he traced his enduring preoccupation with guilt, sin and redemption back to his upbringing.
“I was raised a Dutch Calvinist,” he said. “You don’t outrun your childhood. My childhood was one of predestination of guilt, of total depravity and all that.”
Schrader also credited the efficiency of digital filmmaking with fueling a remarkably prolific late-career stretch, this marks his fourth film since 2021, with three more already in development.
He noted that shoots that once required more than 40 days can now be completed in less than half that time and at a fraction of the cost, pointing to The Basics of Philosophy‘s modest total budget of roughly $2.3 million, made up of $1.5 million in equity financing and $750,000 in tax incentives tied to filming in Missouri and Kansas City.
“That’s the reason to get on a plane,” he said of the incentives. The film runs through the remainder of the festival, which continues until September 12.
