COLOMBO: In the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, New Zealand national cricket team defeated Sri Lanka national cricket team by a commanding 61-run margin, making Pakistan’s path to the semi-finals increasingly difficult.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to field first in Colombo. New Zealand posted 168 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Mitchell Santner top-scored with 47 runs, while Colin McConchie contributed 31.

In response, Sri Lanka managed only 107 for 8 in their 20 overs, handing the Kiwis a comprehensive 61-run victory.

With back-to-back defeats, Sri Lanka have been eliminated from the semi-final race. The result has also complicated Pakistan national cricket team’s qualification scenario.

Net Run Rate Puts Pakistan under Pressure

Following the win, New Zealand’s net run rate improved to +3.05, while Pakistan’s stands at -0.46.

New Zealand will play their final group match against England national cricket team on Friday, while Pakistan face Sri Lanka on Saturday.

If New Zealand lose to England, Pakistan will still have a mathematical chance of progressing, but they would need a massive victory over Sri Lanka to boost their net run rate. However, if New Zealand defeat England, Pakistan will be eliminated even before playing their final match.

It is worth noting that England have already secured qualification for the semi-finals from the group.
