The need for continuity in dialogue and a flexible approach to advance the peace process, Sherry Rehman

Islamabad: Pakistan helped bring two opposing sides to the negotiating table through a fragile ceasefire after a war-like situation, marking what she termed a major diplomatic achievement, said PPP Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman.

In an interview with Al Arabiya English, she said, the high-level talks held in Islamabad were an important step toward regional peace, adding that dialogue remained the only viable option.

Sherry said the ceasefire provided both sides with temporary relief to reassess their positions and prepare for further negotiations, stressing that the process of talks takes time and no lasting solution can be achieved in a single meeting.

She said Pakistan’s leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and President Asif Ali Zardari, made extensive diplomatic efforts behind the scenes.

She added that coordination among state institutions and political leadership reflected national unity and made the negotiations possible.

Sherry Rehman said both sides showed willingness to listen and understand each other, which is essential for successful dialogue.

She said expectations of an immediate solution were unrealistic due to past conflicts and media narratives.

She added that Pakistan strengthened its diplomatic role by providing a neutral platform, noting that selecting Islamabad for talks despite lack of direct trust between the parties was a significant development.

She said initial deadlock and minor violations were part of the early phase of the process.

She emphasized the need for continuity in dialogue and a flexible approach to advance the peace process.
