New clues emerge from Gunman’s vehicle

The investigation into the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack has taken a significant turn as authorities reveal new details about the gunman’s vehicle, uncovering potential links to extremist groups.

NSW police commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that the vehicle registered to Naveed Akram, the younger gunman, contained improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and two homemade Islamic State flags.

The Australian Federal Police commissioner, Krissy Barrett, said early indications suggest the attack was inspired by Islamic State ideology. However, she stressed there is currently no evidence that any other individuals were involved.

The shooting occurred at about 6.47pm local time on Sunday at Archer Park, near Bondi Beach. Police were called after reports of gunfire as crowds gathered for a Hanukkah celebration attended by more than 1,000 people.

At least 15 people were killed, including a 10-year-old girl, a British-born rabbi and a Holocaust survivor. Dozens more were injured when two gunmen opened fire from a bridge overlooking the event. The Australian government has since formally listed the incident as a terrorist attack.

The suspects were later identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his son Naveed. Sajid was shot dead by police at the scene, while Naveed remains in critical condition in hospital.

Further details have emerged about Naveed Akram’s background. According to a close friend, his father was of Indian origin and his mother is Italian, raising additional questions for investigators about the family’s history and any possible overseas connections. Police have confirmed Naveed had ties to India but said it is too early to determine whether these played any role in the attack.

Authorities also praised the actions of a bystander, 43-year-old fruit shop owner Ahmed al Ahmed, who tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen during the chaos. Police say his actions may have prevented further loss of life.

Investigations by state and federal counterterrorism units are ongoing, with authorities urging the public not to speculate as they work to establish the full extent of the attackers’ motivations and movements.
