ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of a severe flood threat in the Indus River, citing the continuing high flood levels in the country’s three eastern rivers.
According to NDMA, heavy inflows are expected to pass through Panjnad Headworks, where discharges between 900,000 and 950,000 cusecs are forecast during September 3–4.
Authorities have cautioned that the situation could worsen in the lower reaches of the Indus River, urging timely preparedness to minimize risk.
According to the NDMA, the Guddu Barrage is expected to see a flow of 800,000 to 1,100,000 cusecs between September 5 and 6. If an embankment is breached to divert water and avert a more dangerous situation, the flow at Guddu Barrage could be reduced to between 750,000 and 900,000 cusecs.
The Sukkur Barrage is projected to experience a flow of 800,000 to 1,100,000 cusecs between September 6 and 7, while the Kotri Barrage is expected to receive a flow of 800,000 to 1,000,000 cusecs from September 8 to 9.
The NDMA has warned that a very high-level flood is expected in the lower areas of the Indus River by September 12 to 13. This surge could impact agricultural land, nearby settlements, villages, and infrastructure.
