After an extensive two-day search, his body was discovered Friday in a rural area of Walker County.

A four-year-old Alabama boy who disappeared on New Year’s Eve was found dead two miles from his father’s home, authorities confirmed.

Johnathan Everett “John John” Boley was last seen around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday playing outside with his six-year-old brother and the family’s black Labrador retriever, Buck, in Jasper, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

After an extensive two-day search, his body was discovered Friday in a rural area of Walker County, just outside Birmingham, Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith announced at a press conference. The dog was found alive near the child’s body.

“It is with great sadness that I announce we have located Jonathan, and Jonathan is deceased,” Smith said, describing the boy as adventurous and fond of the outdoors.

During the investigation, the child’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley, was taken into custody after authorities reported finding items on his property believed to be explosive devices.

Although the items were later determined not to be explosive, Boley was charged with two counts of chemical endangerment of a child and one count of unlawful manufacture of a destructive device or bacteriological weapon.
