Parents can oversee contacts, group access, and manage all privacy settings to protect pre-teens.

BRUSSELS (Reuters): WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta Platforms (META.O), has announced the launch of parent-managed accounts for pre-teens, providing a controlled messaging and calling experience tailored for children under 13.

This initiative addresses growing global concerns over the impact of social media on young users and follows increasing scrutiny over security breaches in messaging apps, where hackers have exploited verification codes and PINs to access private accounts and group chats.

According to WhatsApp, these accounts are designed with enhanced safety and parental oversight, incorporating default privacy settings, strict controls, and guidance tools to ensure children navigate their first messaging experiences safely.

Parents or guardians retain full authority over the account, including deciding who can contact the child, managing group memberships, reviewing message requests from unknown contacts, and adjusting privacy configurations to maintain a secure digital environment.
