ISLAMABAD: State Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced on Wednesday that internet quality in Pakistan improved significantly in 2024, despite persistent connectivity issues, social media restrictions, and ongoing preparations for the rollout of 5G.
Khawaja revealed that Pakistan saw a 28% improvement in internet quality compared to the previous year, attributing the digital challenges to national security concerns.
The minister also highlighted the government’s initiative to enhance digital connectivity by bringing four additional submarine internet cables to the country within the next two years, as reported by Geo.tv. She emphasized the need for improved infrastructure to stabilize the IT sector and provide high-quality internet nationwide.
While discussing the state of Pakistan’s IT sector, Khawaja pointed out that without foreign investment, the industry cannot achieve its potential or build a robust defence against increasing cyberattacks, which often target critical sectors of economic growth.
National Assembly member Abdul Qadir Patel criticized the ongoing internet disruptions and restrictions on social media platforms, warning that such issues are detrimental to businesses and education reliant on stable internet access.
Meanwhile, fellow NA member Shazia Marri raised concerns about the feasibility of the recently introduced Digital Nation Pakistan bill, questioning its practical implementation amid prevailing internet challenges.
In response to these concerns, Khawaja reiterated that national security remains the top priority, affirming that any internet shutdowns are enforced solely to address national security risks.
