WELLINGTON: New Zealand has withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s bid for a fourth term as FIFA president, citing concerns over transparency and confidence in the leadership of world football’s governing body.

According to international media reports, New Zealand Football Chief Executive Andrew Pragnell said an independent investigation into a failed plan involving private investment in FIFA’s commercial rights was necessary to restore confidence in the organisation’s leadership.

Infantino has faced opposition from several football confederations over the issue. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have called for greater scrutiny of his leadership and the way the commercial investment plan was handled.

Meanwhile, the African and South American football confederations have continued to support Infantino.

The Oceania Football Confederation has also cautiously backed FIFA’s current leadership, praising its contribution to football development in the region.

The OFC said the withdrawal of the commercial proposal should provide an opportunity to review the matter and introduce any reforms deemed necessary in the future.

New Zealand’s decision marks a significant shift in support for Infantino ahead of the FIFA presidential election.

Earlier, The Football Association of Ireland has also withdrawn its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s bid for a fourth term, citing serious concerns over governance, transparency and consultation.

The Irish football body confirmed the decision in a letter to FIFA, saying recent developments had raised significant questions about the organisation’s leadership and decision-making processes.

The Irish move comes after the Northern Ireland Football Association backed UEFA’s position on the issue. UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have previously raised concerns over Infantino’s leadership and accused him of undermining trust.

The decision represents another setback for Infantino as he seeks a fourth term as FIFA president.
