SEOUL: The death of Japanese K-pop influencer Mina Chan has shocked online fans and renewed concerns about cyberbullying after reports linked her final days to intense criticism and harassment surrounding her ENHYPEN fandom.

Chan, had more than 80,000 followers on TikTok. The incident reportedly took place during a livestream from her home. Seoul authorities are investigating the circumstances of her death after concerns were raised during a TikTok livestream.

Her death has prompted widespread grief across social media, with fans sharing condolences and messages urging people to think carefully before posting harmful comments online.

Reports said Chan had faced growing criticism from online users before her death. She later apologized publicly amid the backlash, but the negative attention continued.

The controversy has since raised wider questions about the behavior of online fandoms and how quickly criticism can turn into large scale harassment.

Chan’s younger sister confirmed her death in an Instagram Story the following day. “My beloved older sister, who was always kind and warm to everyone she met, has passed away. I kindly ask that you keep my sister in your thoughts and prayers,” she wrote.

Many people who responded to news of Chan’s death focused on the human cost of online hostility. Messages across social media described her as a real person with feelings, hopes and a life beyond her online identity.

One widely shared sentiment called for greater kindness online, warning that people cannot know what another person may be experiencing behind a screen.

Other users expressed sadness and offered condolences to Chan’s family and supporters. Some criticized the cycle in which people participate in online attacks before expressing sympathy after a tragedy.

The case has also renewed discussion about the pressure faced by people who become highly visible within online fan communities. Social media can connect fans with artists and other supporters, but it can also create intense conflicts when personal opinions become public disputes.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Chan’s death. Her passing has also prompted calls for more responsible behavior across social media platforms and online communities.
