The music world is in shock as John Forté, Grammy-nominated artist and celebrated Fugees collaborator, has been found dead at the age of 50.

On Tuesday, January 13, PEOPLE reported that Forté was discovered lifeless in his home in Chilmark, Massachusetts, a quiet town on Martha’s Vineyard.
Authorities revealed that a neighbor found him alone on the kitchen floor and immediately contacted emergency services at 2:25 p.m. on Monday. When police arrived, Forté was unresponsive and without a pulse, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
While the cause of death has not yet been determined, officials confirmed there were no signs of foul play.
“In such a tight-knit community, this loss resonates profoundly. It’s both the beauty and the challenge of living on such a small island,” Chilmark Police Chief Sean Slavin told PEOPLE.
Reports also indicate that Forté had battled a serious health issue roughly a year ago, having been hospitalized after a seizure.
Born January 30, 1975, Forté was an innovative recording artist and producer, best known as a pivotal member of the Refugee Camp All-Stars.
He earned widespread acclaim for his production work on the Fugees’ iconic 1996 album The Score, which earned him a Grammy nomination and cemented his reputation as a visionary force in hip-hop.
