Google messages introduces ‘Delete for Everyone’ option in latest update
Google has finally rolled out one of the most requested features in its messaging app — ‘Delete for Everyone.’ This new capability lets users erase sent messages from all recipients’ chats in RCS group conversations.
Beta version 20250527\_01\_RC00 first introduced the new feature, providing Android users with a much-needed tool to manage accidental sends and unwanted texts. Similar to WhatsApp’s recall feature, this update brings Google Messages closer to rival platforms in terms of privacy and user control.
You Can Finally Unsend Messages in Google’s Group Chats:
Once the feature goes live, users can long-press a message and choose between two options.
- Delete for me
- Delete for everyone
If users choose the latter option, the app removes the message from all participants’ threads, provided everyone is using the latest version of Google Messages and has RCS (Rich Communication Services) enabled.
A brief on-screen notification saying “Deleted for everyone” confirms the action, although some users report that the message doesn’t always appear.
A Major Step Forward for Android Messaging:
Until now, Google Messages lacked a universal recall function, which put it behind platforms like Signal, Telegram, and iMessage. With this rollout, Google closes that gap and takes a significant step toward making its native app more competitive in the messaging space.
The update enables users to:
- Correct typos or mistakes
- Remove inappropriate or accidental messages
- Prevent the spread of misinformation
Google also signals its broader push to position Messages as the default communication tool, aiming to rival Apple’s iMessage in both features and polish.
Google Messages Unsend Feature Sees Limited Rollout, Wider Launch Coming Soon:
The delete feature currently works only in larger RCS group chats and doesn’t yet support one-on-one conversations. However, code findings indicate that broader compatibility is in development.
The feature uses Universal Profile 2.7—the latest RCS standard—so all recipients must run compatible app versions for the deletion to work. Users also have only a limited time after sending a message to recall it.
While Google hasn’t announced an official release date for the stable version, its presence in beta builds suggests a public rollout is likely coming soon.
