Gen Z embraces slow living, trading endless scrolling for a simpler life

Journaling has become a simple way to slow down and process emotions without a screen in sight.

The Gen Z generation raised on smartphones, is quietly stepping back from the screen and it’s happening everywhere from bedrooms to college dorms because digital burnout has become too heavy to ignore.

Across the country, young people are swapping endless scrolling for slower, quieter habits like journaling, mindfulness and deep breathing.

This shift has a name as slow living. It’s not about rejecting technology altogether. It’s about using it less and living more.

For years, being “always online” felt normal. Notifications, feeds and constant updates filled every spare moment. But that constant connection came with a cost, as anxiety, poor sleep and mental fatigue became common complaints among young adults.

Now, many young people are pushing back. Journaling has become a simple way to slow down and process emotions without a screen in sight. Mindfulness apps and in-person meditation sessions are drawing bigger crowds. Even short breathing exercises, once seen as niche wellness trends, are becoming everyday habits.

Social media itself has become an unlikely ally. Videos about slow mornings, analog hobbies and screen-free routines are racking up millions of views.

Experts say this isn’t a passing phase. It reflects a deeper desire for control, presence and mental clarity in a world that rarely slows down. For a generation that grew up hyper connected, choosing to disconnect even briefly feels like an act of self-care.
