In a decisive move reflecting the rapidly evolving dynamics of global sports broadcasting, FIFA has entered into a high-profile partnership with YouTube formally designating the platform as a “preferred digital partner” for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The agreement signals a bold strategic shift aimed at redefining how football’s most prestigious spectacle is consumed in the digital age.

Under the terms of the arrangement, official broadcast rights holders will be permitted to stream the opening 10 minutes of every match live on their respective YouTube channels.

The initiative is designed to provide a compelling preview of each fixture, encouraging viewers particularly younger, digitally engaged audiences to transition to traditional television or licensed streaming platforms to follow the remainder of the match.

In addition, selected fixtures may be broadcast in full on YouTube further enhancing accessibility and audience engagement.

The tournament expanded to 48 teams will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19.

FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström described the collaboration as a significant milestone in the evolution of sports broadcasting.

“FIFA is delighted to welcome YouTube as a preferred platform for the FIFA World Cup 2026. By showcasing premium content and unlocking new opportunities for media partners and creators, this agreement will engage global audiences in unprecedented ways,” he stated.

He further noted that the partnership reinforces FIFA’s ambition to maximise the tournament’s impact across an increasingly dynamic media landscape, ensuring fans worldwide have seamless and immersive access to the sport’s most prestigious event.

Beyond live coverage, media partners will also be authorised to publish extended highlights, behind-the-scenes footage, short-form videos, and video-on-demand content on their YouTube channels.

The agreement reflects a broader shift in the distribution of major sporting events, where traditional broadcasting models are increasingly complemented by digital platforms.

While existing television rights agreements remain unaffected, this initiative introduces a powerful digital extension, enabling FIFA to connect with audiences on a truly global scale.
