An Extreme Heat Watch has been announced by the National Weather Service for several coastal and inland areas of California.

According to the NWS office in Los Angeles / Oxnard, temperatures are expected to rise rapidly early in the week.

The alert was updated Friday evening at 7:59 p.m. and will remain in effect from Monday at 10 a.m. until Friday, March 20, at 8 p.m.

Forecasters say high temperatures will climb into the upper 80s on Monday, followed by near-90°F conditions along the coast from Tuesday through Friday. Some inland areas included in the watch could see temperatures reaching 100°F, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The Extreme Heat Watch covers multiple coastal and inland regions in central and southern California, including the San Luis Obispo County Beaches and San Luis Obispo County Inland Central Coast, as well as the Santa Lucia Mountains.

Along the Santa Barbara County coast, the watch includes the Central Coast Beaches, Inland Central Coast, and Southwestern and Southeastern coastal areas. Inland, the Santa Ynez Valley and the Western and Eastern ranges of the Santa Ynez Mountains are also under the heat watch, highlighting the wide area expected to experience dangerously high temperatures next week.

    Health and Safety Concerns

Meteorologists warn that the intense heat could pose health risks, particularly for children, older adults, pets, and individuals without access to air conditioning or adequate cooling systems. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.

Officials say the watch may be upgraded to an Extreme Heat Warning if forecast confidence increases in the coming days.
