SAN DIEGO; Fans waiting for another “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” movie may have to wait much longer. Co-writer and co-director Jonathan Goldstein confirmed that a sequel script has already been written, but the project is not moving forward because of financial challenges.

Goldstein shared the update while speaking to ScreenRant during San Diego Comic-Con. He said he and longtime creative partner John Francis Daley were officially hired to write a follow up after the first movie’s release.

“We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons. We were hired to write it,” Goldstein said.

However, he admitted that the movie is unlikely to be made anytime soon by saying that, “I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons,” he said. “They’re expensive movies to make, but it would be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would enjoy.”

The first film, released in 2023, received strong reviews from both critics and audiences. It featured Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant. Many praised the movie for its humor, action and faithful adaptation of the popular tabletop game.

Despite the positive response, the film earned about $205 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $150 million. Industry analysts noted that marketing and distribution costs likely pushed the movie’s break even point much higher, making it difficult for the studio to justify another expensive sequel.

The project has also faced several business changes behind the scenes. Paramount, which distributed the original film, was acquired by Skydance Media in 2025. At the same time, legal issues related to its planned merger with Warner Bros. Discovery have added uncertainty to future projects.
