In a historic shift, Chinese automakers are set to dethrone Japanese manufacturers as the world’s largest sellers of new vehicles in 2025, marking a monumental change in the global automotive landscape.
This transformative milestone was detailed in a recent report by Nikkei Asia, one of Japan’s foremost financial publications.
According to estimates based on company disclosures from January to November 2025, along with data from S&P Global Mobility, Chinese automakers are on track to sell around 27 million vehicles globally, reflecting a remarkable 17% year-over-year increase.
This surge in sales will propel China into the top position, overtaking Japan, which has dominated the global automotive market for over two decades. Japanese manufacturers are projected to maintain a steady sales volume of approximately 25 million vehicles, unable to match the explosive growth driven by their Chinese counterparts.
Historically, the automotive race was defined by a fierce rivalry between Japan and the United States, with Japan reaching its zenith in 2018, when it sold nearly 30 million vehicles.
However, the tides have turned dramatically. As recently as 2022, Chinese automakers lagged behind Japan by a staggering 8 million vehicles. In just three short years, China has managed to close this gap and secure its position as the new leader in global vehicle sales.
