Jhang: Rising waters of the Chenab River have triggered a flood alert in Jhang, putting low-lying areas and riverbank communities on high alert as authorities warn of possible flooding and increasing risks of land erosion.

The rapid increase in water levels has raised concerns among residents and farmers living along the river, with several acres of farmland already reported damaged due to strong currents.

The district administration has stepped up precautionary measures as a flood surge is expected to reach Trimmu Headworks within the next 48 hours.

Local communities along the riverbanks have expressed concern over continued erosion, saying that further rise in water levels could cause additional damage to agricultural land and nearby settlements.

The district administration has increased monitoring in vulnerable areas and advised residents living near the river to remain alert and follow official instructions if the situation deteriorates.

Officials said precautionary arrangements are being strengthened to deal with any potential emergency and minimise risks to lives and property.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued flood warnings for several parts of the country, citing rising water levels in rivers, streams, hill torrents and seasonal waterways.

According to the NDMA, water levels are expected to increase in the Jhelum, Neelum, Poonch and Kanshi rivers, along with streams including Mehal, Betar and Bhimber.

The authority has also warned of possible flash floods in hill torrents across Dera Ghazi Khan and Potohar regions, including areas around the Soan River.

The NDMA further warned that increased water releases from India’s Thein, Pong and Bhakra reservoirs could raise water levels in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers, potentially worsening flood conditions in downstream areas.

Authorities also cautioned about the possibility of urban flooding in several cities, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Khushab, Sialkot, Gujrat, Lahore, Narowal, Okara, Chakwal and Attock.

The NDMA has directed relevant departments and local administrations to remain on high alert, take preventive measures in vulnerable areas and ensure timely response to protect lives and property.
