Charlie Hunnam opened up about the emotional challenge of playing serial killer Ed Gein in Netflix’s Monster.

The actor revealed that two rescued kittens helped him get through the difficult role.

Charlie recently received his first Emmy nomination for his performance in Monster: The Ed Gein Story but behind the success, he said preparing for the role was far from easy.

To understand the real-life killer, the star spent months reading police files, old records and other information about Gein’s life as well.

He admitted that some of what he read stayed with him and even affected his sleep.

The 46-year-old star also worked hard to look like the character as he lost around 30 pounds in a little over three weeks and spent hours getting ready each day with makeup and hair changes.

Charlie even created a new voice for the role and although he later found real recordings of Gein, he decided to keep using the voice he already developed because filming already started.

Once the cameras stopped rolling, Charlie found comfort in an unexpected way.

While staying in Chicago, he adopted two stray kittens and kept them with him during filming as he even hired someone to look after them while he was working.

Moreover, Monster: The Ed Gein Story received seven Emmy nominations.
