Carrier Pidge turns texting into slow trips by virtual pigeons

A new iOS messaging app is turning instant texting into a slow and playful experience by sending messages through virtual carrier pigeons, using real world distance to decide how long each message takes to arrive.

The app turns instant messaging into a playful waiting game, sending every text on a virtual pigeon journey between the sender and recipient instead of delivering it instantly, the app is called Carrier Pidge.

The app uses the real GPS distance between two users to estimate delivery time. The virtual pigeons travel at 110 mph, meaning nearby messages can arrive within seconds while texts sent across the United States may take hours.

Messages traveling to someone on the other side of the world can take several days to reach their destination, the idea turns a normally instant activity into a waiting game based on physical distance.

The virtual journey also comes with a small risk. Each pigeon has a 0.2% chance of getting lost and dying before reaching its destination. Its flying speed can also change by as much as 25%, adding another unpredictable element to the delivery process.

Developer Noah Larrobino spent about three weeks building the app. He has openly described its intentionally pointless concept, with the entire experience designed around the traditional carrier pigeon theme.

Users who add friends through Carrier Pidge become part of their “flock.” Incoming friend requests are stored in an “aviary,” keeping the app’s bird based concept throughout the messaging experience.

The unusual approach offers a humorous contrast to popular messaging services, where users expect texts to arrive almost instantly. Carrier Pidge instead makes users wait for their messages to complete their virtual journey.

I made an app that lets you send courier pigeons (bats, snails, penguins, turtles, and more) where messages can day hours to months to arrive depending on where your friends live. pic.twitter.com/WEhkUKiXU5

The app is not the only service using virtual birds for messaging, another application called Roost also sends messages in real time through virtual birds.

Carrier Pidge and Roost similar concepts have raised concerns about whether one application copied the other. However, both apps have claimed they were developed independently.

Carrier Pidge stands out by making the delay itself part of the experience, rather than treating slow delivery as a problem, the app turns waiting, distance and uncertainty into its central feature. The result is a messaging service that replaces instant communication with a playful digital version of a centuries old method of sending messages.
