The Environment Agency reported Friday that England received only 6% of its long term average rainfall in August.

LONDON: Wildfires tear through parts of England as record heat and severe drought turn dry vegetation into fuel, forcing evacuations and overwhelming emergency crews.

Fire crews are battling several dangerous blazes while authorities urge residents to avoid affected areas and take extreme care to prevent further fires.

A grass fire near a local golf course quickly spread into a residential neighborhood, creating one of the most serious incidents faced by local firefighters. West Midlands Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill described the blaze as “one of the most dangerous incidents” the service has faced and said the devastation was extensive.

At least six properties were destroyed in the fire, according to the information provided in the reports. The wildfires have also caused injuries and smoke related health problems.

According to the reports, paramedics treated 54 patients following the West Midlands wildfires, with 19 taken to hospitals for further treatment.

Three firefighters and a child were among those who required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation and injuries. The latest fires come after other major incidents that have placed additional pressure on emergency services.

Emergency authorities have increased efforts to coordinate the response as several areas continue to face serious fire risks. Emergency “COBRA” meetings were convened to organize a national response, provide support to local authorities facing pressure and consider possible preventive measures.

Potential restrictions, including bans on disposable barbecues, were also considered as authorities looked for ways to reduce the risk of new fires.

The Environment Agency reported Friday that England received only 6% of its long term average rainfall in August after experiencing its driest July on record.
