The record-breaking performance allowed BYD to surpass US-based Tesla in annual sales for the first time.

Beijing: The Chinese automaker BYD has set a new global record for electric vehicle (EV) sales, selling 2.26 million electric cars in 2025, the company announced. This is the highest annual EV sales ever reported by any automaker worldwide.

The record-breaking performance allowed BYD to surpass US-based Tesla in annual sales for the first time. Tesla had reported sales of 1.22 million EVs by the end of September 2025, with its full-year figures expected later this week.

According to the announcement, BYD shared these figures with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, highlighting the company’s continued growth in the global EV market.

Despite facing heavy tariffs in the US, BYD’s sales are rising strongly in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

In comparison, in 2024, Tesla narrowly led BYD, selling 1.79 million electric vehicles versus BYD’s 1.76 million, marking a closely contested race between the two leading EV manufacturers.

BYD’s 2025 sales milestone underscores the company’s rapid expansion and growing influence in the global electric vehicle industry.

Earlier, Car sales in Pakistan have surged, reaching 15,442 units as customers flocked to showrooms. The rise reflects growing consumer confidence due to falling inflation and increasing interest in new hybrid models.

The country’s automobile sector continued its strong recovery in November 2025, with total car sales rising 53% compared to November 2024, when 10,163 units were sold. This trend indicates a sustained rebound in consumer demand.

Meanwhile, cumulative vehicle sales for the first five months of fiscal year 2026 have reached 75,042 units.
