QUETTA: The bodies of at least nine labourers have been recovered after a coalmine collapsed in Sorange area of Quetta, confirmed Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Thursday.
Qurban Jogezai, owner of the affected mine, said the incident was caused by a methane gas explosion. He confirmed that as many as 42 labourers were working inside the mine at the time of the incident. All miners trapped in the mine belonged to Shangla district, Jogezai added.
In a separate incident earlier today, a labourer lost his life in a coalmine accident in the Harnai district of Balochistan, APP reported quoting police sources.
Initial reports said the worker was carrying out his duties inside the coal mine when a large boulder suddenly fell on him, causing fatal injuries.
The coalminer died on the spot.
Upon receiving information about the incident, rescue team rushed to the site and shifted the body to a nearby hospital for legal formalities.
Coalmine accidents are common in Balochistan and Sindh, often due to inadequate safety measures and poor mining conditions.
Earlier this month, at least four labourers were killed and five others seriously injured on when a wall collapsed inside a coal mine near Meting railway station in Thatta district.
The incident occurred at the Ibrahim Coal Mines, situated within the Kohistani belt of Thatta.
The dead were identified as 40-year-old Ziaullah, 51-year-old Noor Mohammad, 20-year-old Irfanullah — all residents of Swat — and 41-year-old Saindad, resident of Sanghar district.
