Australians gain a bonus hour as daylight saving ends

Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory do not observe daylight saving.

Millions of Australians will enjoy an extra hour of sleep as daylight saving time ends tomorrow, Sunday, 5 April 2026. Clocks in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory will move back one hour at 2:00 am, marking the transition from daylight saving to standard time.

Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory do not observe daylight saving, so clocks in these regions will remain unchanged. Smart devices typically update automatically, but manual clocks will need to be adjusted by hand.

For those working during the time change, shifts may be extended by an hour, with pay usually calculated according to the “by the clock” rule unless otherwise specified by workplace agreements.

Experts advise gradually adjusting bedtimes by 15 minutes per night and getting ample morning light to help reset the internal body clock. Maintaining a consistent sleep routine is also important to reduce disruption.

Daylight saving will resume in six months on Sunday, 4 October 2026, when clocks will move forward again.
