US government introduces special passport with Trump image

A highly unusual move by the United States government is drawing global attention as officials confirmed that a limited-edition passport featuring an image of President Donald Trump will soon be introduced as part of a special national commemorative release.

The initiative announced by the United States Department of State comes ahead of the country’s 250th Independence Day celebrations on July 4.

The special passport design is intended to mark the historic milestone but its design choice has already sparked widespread debate in political and diplomatic circles.

According to officials the limited-edition passport will feature a striking portrait of President Trump placed over the Declaration of Independence along with his signature printed in gold. A second version will showcase a historic illustration of the Founding Fathers, reflecting the nation’s revolutionary origins.

The passports will be available in strictly limited numbers and can only be obtained through in-person appointments in Washington, D.C., subject to availability. Authorities also confirmed that applicants will not be charged any additional fee for the commemorative version.

While supporters describe the initiative as a patriotic tribute to American history, critics have strongly questioned the decision calling it a departure from long-standing government tradition.

Opposition figures particularly from the Democratic Party, argue that featuring a sitting president in an official travel document blurs the line between national identity and personal branding.

Traditionally US passports have focused on national symbols and historic achievements, including landmarks, cultural icons, and milestones such as the Moon landing and the Statue of Liberty. The inclusion of a presidential portrait marks a sharp break from this established practice, which has typically avoided featuring current political leaders in official documents.

In most democratic countries, passports remain strictly neutral often highlighting heritage, geography, and national achievements rather than political figures. Even in highly centralized states, the depiction of sitting leaders in travel documents is extremely rare.

Since returning to office President Trump has increasingly expanded his personal branding across federal institutions. His name has appeared on various government buildings and initiatives, and reports suggest that his signature may also be added to US currency in the near future.

The move has further intensified debate in Washington over the growing personalization of government symbols. Supporters call it a bold celebration of national history, while critics warn it signals an unprecedented blending of political identity with official state documentation.
