Mbappé equals Ronaldo’s historic goal record at Real Madrid

Madrid, Spain: On a crisp Madrid evening, the Santiago Bernabeu set the stage for a historic moment. Kylian Mbappé, the French prodigy who joined Real Madrid in 2024, was about to make history.

He scored his 59th goal of the year in a tense finale against 10-man Sevilla, equaling the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the most goals in a single calendar year at the club.

The milestone seemed just out of reach until the 90th minute, when Mbappé stepped up for a penalty after Juanlu Sánchez fouled Rodrygo in the box. Calm and composed, he sent the ball into the net, igniting celebrations and cementing his place alongside Madrid legends.

After scoring, Mbappé paid tribute to his idol, Ronaldo, replicating a subtle version of the famous “Siu” celebration and blowing a kiss to the cameras a heartfelt nod to the man who inspired his journey.

“It’s unbelievable,” Mbappé told Mundo Deportivo. “In my first full year at Madrid, to achieve what Cristiano did is surreal. He’s my idol and the greatest player in the club’s history. The celebration is for him. He has guided me, helped me adapt, and now I consider him a friend. I send my best wishes to him and all Madrid fans.”

The match itself was a rollercoaster. Jude Bellingham’s 38th-minute header put Madrid ahead, but Sevilla, even with 10 players, repeatedly threatened Madrid’s defense.

Veterans Alexis Sánchez and Juanlu Sánchez tested goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, keeping the tension high until Mbappé’s late penalty finally sealed the 2-0 win.

For coach Xabi Alonso, who has faced criticism over recent inconsistent performances, the victory provides a sigh of relief but scrutiny remains. Club president Florentino Pérez now has two weeks to reflect before Madrid faces Real Betis on January 4.

Off the pitch, Mbappé’s year has been equally dramatic. He recently concluded a legal battle against Paris Saint-Germain, winning €60 million (£52.5m/$63m) in unpaid wages and bonuses, a fraction of the €263 million he initially demanded. This triumph underscores not just his talent but his determination and resilience.

As the year ends, Mbappé’s achievement is more than a recordit  is a story of perseverance, idolization, and footballing excellence. Real Madrid fans witnessed a chapter that will be remembered for decades: the rise of a superstar paying homage to the legends before him while forging his own legacy.
