The bustling city of Lagos has taken a giant step in celebrating its dynamic culture and artistic spirit with the launch of its inaugural Street Art Festival, alongside a comprehensive exhibition honoring legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

The ‘Legendary Lagos: City of Dreams’ festival features 12 renowned artists—nine from Nigeria and three international—transforming city walls into large-scale murals that showcase Lagos’s vibrant energy and social themes. Lithuanian artist Andrey Adno’s mural, ‘The Pace of Lagos,’ captures the city’s relentless rhythm, while local artist HK Locks’s piece emphasizes unity and migration, portraying Lagos as a melting pot of diverse aspirations.

Organizers aim to make art accessible and inspire social change through these colorful expressions, transforming Lagos into an open-air gallery that reflects its lively spirit.

In addition to the street art celebrations, Lagos hosts an expansive exhibition commemorating Fela Kuti, the legendary Afrobeat musician and activist. Marking the African debut of an event initially developed by the Philharmonie de Paris, the exhibition features 440 items including memorabilia, photographs, paintings, and videos of Fela’s iconic performances. Visitors can enjoy live renditions of his music and purchase replicas of his signature colorful underwear, offering an immersive experience into his life and legacy.

Lead curator Seun Ali highlighted the exhibition’s expanded scope, noting it is three times larger than the original French version and now includes legacy programming to honor Fela’s enduring influence.

Fela Kuti, who passed away in 1997, remains a symbol of resistance against political corruption and authoritarian rule in Nigeria. His blend of jazz, funk, and West African rhythms not only defined a musical genre but also fueled social activism, inspiring generations of Nigerian artists and activists.

Bayo Omoboriowo, a creative entrepreneur, emphasized the relevance of Fela’s activism today, questioning whether there are still voices capable of challenging authority and fighting for causes with the same passion.

As Lagos continues to celebrate its rich cultural heritage, these events underscore the city’s role as a vibrant hub of creativity, activism, and artistic expression, resonating with both local residents and the global community.
