Dutch Authorities Fine Netflix $4.98 Million for Personal Data Use
Dutch authorities have imposed a €4.75 million ($4.98 million) fine on Netflix for mishandling subscriber personal data.
The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) stated that between 2018 and 2020, Netflix failed to adequately inform customers about the use of their data, and the information provided was unclear in some areas.
While Netflix has since updated its privacy statement and improved subscriber communications regarding data usage, the company has appealed the fine.
Aleid Wolfsen, AP chairman, emphasized that major companies like Netflix, with billions in revenue and millions of global customers, must be transparent about how they handle personal data.
The data protection watchdog also pointed out that Netflix had not clearly explained why it was collecting personal data, which data was shared with third parties, how long the data was kept, and the security measures in place for data transmitted outside Europe.
