After almost 20 years of waiting, National Treasure 3 may finally be happening.

The third movie is moving ahead and Nicolas Cage is expected to return as Benjamin Gates.

Director Jon Turteltaub shared the news during a live event in Philadelphia.

He said the movie now has a script that has been approved by both him and Disney.

    “It’s happening,” Turteltaub said.

Cage played Ben Gates in the first two National Treasure movies. The director also said that other original cast members could return for the new movie.

Turteltaub did warn that things can still change before filming begins. However, Hollywood plans are not always certain.

“It’s finally real,” he said. He then joked about how easily things can go wrong, saying, “Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no National Treasure 3.”

The first National Treasure movie came out in 2004. Cage starred in it with Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha. The second movie came in 2007.

Fans have been waiting for another movie ever since.

The idea of a third film has been discussed for years, but it never seemed to get very far.

Cage even expressed doubt about National Treasure 3 in 2022.

Now, things appear to be different as with a script approved and Cage expected to return, the long awaited sequel is finally looking much more real.
