The pact reflects the three countries’ shared commitment to strengthening collective security and promoting peace in the region.

MAKKAH: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye on Friday signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, pledging to treat an armed attack on any one of the three countries as an attack on them all, in a move aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation.

The agreement was signed during the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence, attended by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said in a statement.

According to the Foreign Office, the pact reflects the three countries’ shared commitment to strengthening collective security and promoting peace, stability and deterrence in the region.

Under the agreement, any armed aggression against one signatory will trigger a collective response, while defence cooperation will be expanded across multiple sectors.

The accord comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following the conflict between the United States and Iran, which has disrupted regional security and maritime traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan has played a diplomatic role in efforts to ease tensions during the crisis.

Turkiye, which has NATO’s second-largest military, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf’s largest economy and a leading oil exporter, and Pakistan, the world’s only nuclear-armed Muslim-majority nation, are expected to deepen military coordination under the new framework.

The agreement builds on a bilateral mutual defence pact signed by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia last year, under which both countries agreed to regard an attack on either nation as an attack on both.
