    New study gives coffee drinkers more good news

    NEW YORK: Coffee lovers have a fresh reason to enjoy their daily brew after a new scientific review found that moderate coffee consumption may offer several health benefits, including a lower risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions.

    A new scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA) concluded that up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day roughly equivalent to five 8-ounce cups of coffee is considered safe for most healthy adults.

    The review found that coffee consumed without added sugar, flavored syrups, cream or other high-calorie ingredients may be associated with a lower risk of heart disease, heart failure, stroke and Type 2 diabetes.

    However, researchers stressed that these findings do not apply to all caffeinated beverages. Energy drinks, which often contain much higher levels of caffeine, have been linked to health risks, including high blood pressure and irregular heart rhythms.

    The researchers also noted that much of the evidence linking coffee consumption to improved health comes from observational studies. While these studies can identify associations, they do not prove that coffee directly causes better health outcomes.

    According to the review, the strongest potential health benefits appear among people who drink two to four cups of coffee a day, rather than those who consume the maximum recommended caffeine limit.

    Experts added that individuals respond differently to caffeine depending on factors such as genetics, medications and underlying health conditions.

    They also cautioned that adding large amounts of sugar, flavored syrups, whipped cream or other high-calorie ingredients may reduce or eliminate coffee’s potential health benefits.

    Health experts said the findings should reassure regular coffee drinkers but emphasized that coffee is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. They advised that maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly and managing blood pressure and other health conditions remain the most effective ways to support long-term health.
