Water tanker claims another life in Karachi

Following the incident, enraged individuals set the water tanker on fire.

A man lost his life after being crushed by a water tanker in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area, police said on Saturday, adding that the driver escaped from the scene after the accident.

The incident happened near Perfume Chowk, where rescue teams shifted the victim to a hospital after he was hit by the tanker. The man, believed to be around 30 years old, has not yet been identified.

Following the incident, enraged individuals set the water tanker on fire.

This incident comes just days after another incident in Nazimabad No 1, where two young sisters were killed and a boy was injured after they fell from a motorcycle and were run over by an oil tanker. Initial reports suggested that the motorcycle lost balance on a damaged road, causing the girls to fall under the passing tanker.

Police had said that the tanker driver in that case fled initially but was later arrested, and the vehicle was taken into custody.

According to rescue officials, at least 312 people have died in traffic accidents across Karachi this year, while 3,275 others have been injured. Heavy vehicles are a major cause of these deaths, with around 107 fatalities linked to such transport, including 48 caused by trailers and 31 by water tankers. Buses were involved in 12 deaths, while dumpers caused five fatalities.

The latest incident once again highlights the serious issue of reckless driving by heavy vehicle drivers in Karachi, especially in residential areas. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles, which continues to result in deadly accidents.
