A recent report by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) warns that the world is moving rapidly toward instability and violence, with several potentially dangerous global conflicts likely to emerge in 2026. The report highlights serious threats to global peace and U.S. national security.

According to the report, tensions are expected to rise across multiple fronts, including Gaza, Ukraine, Pakistan-India, and Afghanistan. Crises in Africa and the Middle East could intensify, potentially leading to increased human suffering. Experts caution that threats to global stability are now at their highest level since World War II.

The CFR’s Center for Preventive Action, which produced the report, assessed potential conflicts worldwide and ranked them by severity and impact. While the Trump administration made attempts to reduce tensions in Gaza, Ukraine, Congo, India, and Pakistan, some policy measures and pressure reportedly exacerbated situations in certain instances. The report also criticizes cuts to institutions and funding aimed at conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Key Security Concerns for Pakistan in 2026

India-Pakistan Tensions: A renewed armed conflict could occur due to increasing militant activity in Indian-administered Kashmir and stricter security measures.

Afghanistan-Pakistan Cross-Border Threats: Renewed clashes may arise from cross-border extremist attacks. These threats are categorized as medium likelihood with moderate impact.

Global Hotspots Highlighted in the Report

Middle East: Escalation between Israel and Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank; potential Iran-Israel conflict.

Europe: Intensification of the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions between Russia and NATO.

Americas: Potential U.S. military intervention in Venezuela; rising political violence within the U.S.

Asia: Increased pressure from China on Taiwan and North Korea’s nuclear testing.

The report emphasizes that the U.S. faces the highest risk due to its extensive global alliances and security commitments. It calls for proactive diplomatic measures and strengthened preventive efforts to address rising global instability in the coming year.
