High-level negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad ended without a formal agreement, as US Vice President JD Vance confirmed the outcome and departed for Washington.

Speaking at a press briefing, Vance stated that despite prolonged and substantive discussions, the two sides were unable to reach a final understanding. He noted that Iran did not agree to key US proposals, resulting in the talks concluding without a deal.

The US delegation he said, had presented a comprehensive and final offer addressing major points of contention. “The next step now lies with Iran,” Vance remarked indicating that Washington awaits Tehran’s response.

According to the US Vice President the negotiations spanned approximately 21 hours and covered a wide range of sensitive and strategic issues. While describing the dialogue as constructive in parts he acknowledged that the absence of a breakthrough was a setback.

A central issue in the discussions remained Iran’s nuclear program. Vance emphasized that the United States had clearly outlined its conditions and red lines, particularly the requirement for credible assurances that Iran would not pursue nuclear weapons capabilities.

Vice President JD Vance gives an update in Pakistan:

“The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon.” pic.twitter.com/il4THN5DwV

He expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s leadership, including Asim Munir, for facilitating the talks and providing a supportive diplomatic environment aimed at bridging differences between the two sides.

Vance further noted that the United States participated in the negotiations in good faith, under the direction of President Donald Trump, making every effort to secure a meaningful outcome. However, he conceded that no agreement could ultimately be reached.

Following the conclusion of the talks, the US delegation departed Islamabad, bringing an end to a closely monitored diplomatic initiative that had raised expectations for progress toward easing regional tensions.
