“Between 600,000 and one million Iranian households are now temporarily displaced inside Iran as a result of the ongoing conflict”
GENEVA: The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has reported that up to 3.2 million people have been displaced inside Iran since the outbreak of the Middle East war.
“Between 600,000 and one million Iranian households are now temporarily displaced inside Iran as a result of the ongoing conflict, according to preliminary assessments,” said Ayaki Ito, head of UNHCR’s emergency support team and refugee response coordinator for the Middle East emergency.
He warned that the number of displaced people is likely to rise as hostilities continue, noting the situation as a worrying escalation in humanitarian needs.
The ongoing conflict began with attacks launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, followed by Iran striking targets in multiple countries across the Gulf region.
Ito explained that most displaced individuals were reportedly fleeing from Tehran and other major cities to northern and rural areas seeking safety. He also noted that refugee families already living in Iran, mostly Afghans, were particularly vulnerable, given their precarious conditions and limited support networks.
“Families are leaving affected areas amid rising insecurity and limited access to essential services,” Ito said, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
The UN refugee agency, with a longstanding presence in Iran, said it is adapting its response to meet growing needs, working closely with national authorities and partners to assess emerging requirements and strengthen preparedness for population movements.
Ito emphasized the urgent need to protect civilians, maintain humanitarian access, and ensure borders remain open for those seeking safety, in line with international obligations.
