ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, last week and asked him to use Pakistan’s influence to help bring Iran back to the negotiating table, Reuters reported, citing two Pakistani sources.
According to the sources, the main request from the United States was for Pakistan to use its influence to encourage Iran to resume negotiations.
Reuters reported that the call was initiated by Trump. The White House press secretary’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It also remained unclear what other matters were discussed between Trump and Syed Asim Munir.
Filed Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with Iranian officials. He met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, with Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also attending the meeting.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said Munir’s visit was part of Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
The reported call came as Pakistan seeks to play a diplomatic role in efforts to ease tensions and encourage dialogue involving Iran.

Earlier, Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States and pave the way for a lasting ceasefire are continuing. As part of these efforts, Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir has arrived in Iran along with Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
During the visit, Field Marshal Asim Munir met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, the two officials discussed matters of mutual interest. Asim Munir is also expected to hold talks with senior Iranian officials during the visit.
The visit comes at a time of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington. Pakistan has been pursuing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing the conflict and encouraging a peaceful and lasting resolution.
